No. 9 Nighthawks Collect Third Ranked Victory Over No. 16 West Alabama
ROME, Ga. – The No. 9 University of North Georgia (UNG) women's tennis team rolled to a 4-1 win over No. 16 West Alabama in a midweek neutral site match at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Ga. on Tuesday.
The victory over the Tigers (10-5, 5-0 Gulf South) marked UNG's (12-6, 2-1 Peach Belt) third win over a ranked opponent this season.
Tuesday victory was highlighted in doubles play as the Nighthawks earned the doubles point with two emphatic wins.
UNG took a 6-4 win in the #3 doubles match as senior Ashley Moinard and freshman Vasilissa Kupriyanova paired well for the victory.
In #1 doubles, seniors Angelina Linnikova and Carolina Reis, ranked as the No. 19 women's doubles pairing by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), had their work cut out for them. They were set to face UWA's Valentina Mutilba and Shaira Rivera, the No. 1 women's doubles team in the country.
Linnikova and Reis did not flinch as they dominated the match for a 6-2 victory, their second over a ranked duo this spring.
After defeating the No. 7 doubles tandem in the country back on March 29, Linnikova and Reis are now 2-0 against nationally ranked opponents in doubles play this year.
The match moved to singles and the Nighthawks cruised to a victory.
Kupriyanova dominated Mutilba in the #3 singles match for a 6-3, 6-2 win.
Freshman Linn Goerdes also won her singles match in the #4 slot by taking down Emiri Takanishi 6-1, 6-4. Goerdes has compiled the second most singles wins on the team this season with 11.
Junior Emily Bush rallied in come-from-behind fashion in #6 singles after losing the first set 2-6 to win 6-0, 6-3 and clinch the Nighthawk victory. The junior transfer from Young Harris holds the second-best singles winning percentage among the Nighthawks this season with a 9-2 record thus far.
UNG will now return home for its next match on Friday, April 11. The final home match of the season and Senior Day will take place in Dahlonega from the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek at 2 p.m. against No. 14 Columbus State.
