Linnikova Named PBC Women's Tennis Player Of The Week
DAHLONEGA -- University of North Georgia (UNG) No. 9 women's tennis senior Angelina Linnikova has been named the Peach Belt Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for a fifth time this season the league office announced on Monday.
Linnikova went undefeated in matches against Tusculum and No. 4 Flagler last week.
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) No. 5 women's singles player in the country remained undefeated in singles play this season with wins over Tusculum's Ylva Frafjord Landa and Flagler's ITA women's singles No. 2 Dana Heimen.
On Saturday, Linnikova simply dominated the second-ranked singles player in the country. She defeated Heimen 6-2, 6-0 for her 14th straight singles victory this spring. She remains the only undefeated player in the ITA women's singles top 10 rankings in the spring portion of the season.
Linnikova is 21-2 in singles matches going back to the fall portion of the season which includes play in the ITA Southeast Regional and ITA Cup. In that span she is 6-2 against nationally ranked opponents and 4-1 against opponents in the top 15. Her lone top-15 loss came against No. 1 Ashleigh Simes from Lee back on Oct. 12 who she exacted revenge upon with a 7-6 (9-7 tiebreaker), 6-4 victory on March 8. The Nighthawk senior is now 3-0 against the No. 1 and 2 singles players in the country this spring.
Back on March 10, Linnikova became the first player in program history and the first in the PBC since 2017 to win the conference's weekly award four times in one season. She is now the first player in conference history to win the award at least five times in a season since Armstrong State's Iuliia Stupak won it six times in the 2008 season.
Linnikova and UNG are back in action this week with a road match on Friday, April 4 at Lander. First serve from Greenwood, S.C. is set for 12 p.m.
