No. 4 Nighthawks Claim Share Of PBC Regular-Season Championship With Victory Over GSW
DAHLONEGA – The No. 4 University of North Georgia (UNG) women's tennis team completed the regular season with a 7-0 demolition of Georgia Southwestern at the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek Monday afternoon.
The victory marked UNG's (16-6, 5-1 Peach Belt) third shutout of the season and first over a conference opponent in the Hurricanes (3-9, 0-5). It also secured the program's third PBC regular-season Championship in program history.
The Nighthawks have now finished as the top or tied for the top team in the conference in four of the last seasons. With a 5-1 record this year, they finished tied with No. 5 Flagler and No. 12 Columbus State, sharing the regular season crown between the three schools for the second year in a row.
The Nighthawks did not lose a single set in Monday's victory. They won the doubles point by walkover in the #3 match and a 6-0 victory from senior Ashley Moinard and freshman Vasilissa Kupriyanova in the #2 match.
UNG also sweep singles play as senior and Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) women's singles No. 5 Angelina Linnikova racked up her 19th win of the year with a 6-1, 6-4 victory in #1 singles.
The win completed a perfect regular season for Linnikova who holds a 19-0 record in singles matches. She is the first player in program history to go undefeated in the regular season.
Moinard ended the spring portion of the season with a 12-9 singles record after another victory on Monday in the #2 slot. The senior has recorded double digit singles victories in three consecutive years for the Nighthawks.
In #3 singles, the freshman Kupriyanova earned a milestone win as her 6-1, 6-1 domination resulted in her 10th victory of the season.
Junior Emily Bush, who has 13 singles triumphs this year, added to her impressive record as she dismantled her opponent for a 6-0, 6-0 sweep.
In just her eighth match of the season, freshman Victoria Niox-Chateau racked up her fourth straight win after another 6-0, 6-0 sweep in #5 singles.
UNG now looks ahead to the 2025 PBC Tournament which takes place April 25-27 in Columbus, Ga.
