Second Round Incomplete Due To Darkness, No. 2 UNG In Fourth At Tennessee River Rumble
LENOIR CITY, Tenn. – The No. 2 University of North Georgia (UNG) men's golf team sits in fourth place after day one at the Tennessee River Rumble at Windriver Golf Club in Lenoir City, Tenn.
The 20-team field did not complete 36 holes on Monday as the second round of the event was called due to darkness after most teams completed approximately 13 holes of play in the round.
Lenoir-Rhyne leads the field by three shots at the stoppage with a combined score of 5-under-par at the 7,099-yard, par-72 Windriver. No. 12 Wingate trails at 2-under, followed by No. 4 and host Lincoln Memorial at 1-over and the Nighthawks at 4-over.
Three UNG golfers reside in the top 25 after play on Monday. Senior Ethan Day and graduate student Jack Vajda headline the day-one performance as both golfers sit in eighth place at 1-under par in total.
Vajda posted his eighth sub-70 round of the season in the first 18 holes as he carded six birdies to shoot a 3-under 69 in the opener. It was tied for the second-best round of the tournament on Monday.
Day shot an even 72 in the first round, but exited the course at 1-under after 13 holes in round two. He will tee off on the par-5 14th on Tuesday to complete his second round.
Sophomore Colby Bennett has not finished outside the top 25 this season and is firmly in the mix after Monday's performance. The second-year Nighthawk sits in 22nd place at 1-over after also shooting an even-par 72 in round one.
Senior Hughes Threlkeld is holding firm in 48th place among the 100-player field while junior Hunter Smith sits in 71st heading into the final day of play on Tuesday.
The 20 teams in competition will tee off Tuesday morning to complete the second round of the tournament before finishing the 54-hole event later in the day. UNG is looking for its second consecutive win and fourth of the season after coming away victorious in the GCSU Bobcat Invitational last week.
